Cambodians are very animist, that is, they regularly attribute to things a soul comparable to the human soul. Instead of calling a doctor, they call a Kru, also called a guru, who is more likely to cure them. Full of spirituality, their universe is full of geniuses and spirits, both good and bad. They are also extremely superstitious: enter a pagoda with a hat on and you will be bald in your next life.

Cambodians are also very modest, both in their behavior and in their dress. It is rare to come across any of the finely dressed, especially since they flee the sun’s rays like the plague. The outfits are thus more generally summarized by a long-sleeved t-shirt with a turtleneck, gloves, trousers, socks with the seam adapted to the wearing of flip-flops, and the krama, a traditional Khmer check scarf, worn around the head. It is therefore advisable that you dress correctly and not provocatively (no shirtless, even if it is very hot), especially on the temples.

Speaking of krama, it has a multitude of uses: it can be worn as a scarf, a hat, a belt, a scarf or a pareo. It is also used as a towel, tea towel, blanket or pillow. If you don’t want a cold to come along on your trip, take this famous krama with you, as air conditioning is regularly at its peak in shops, cars, and buses.
